We're proud to be releasing two new music videos, both filmed at the stunning Lakewood Memorial Chapel in Minneapolis. In Droysn Iz Finster is a Yiddish love ballad, in which a lover finds themselves "alein nit farvos" (alone and bewildered) in the street, wondering where their beloved has gone. Arrangement by Olga Amelkina-Vera, video/audio by Gordon Byrd. Sub o Salcie Pletoasă is a song from the Romanian Orthodox tradition, which we learned from Irina Ivorciuc in Gura Humorului, Romania. "The holy mother prayed to the weeping willow tree, 'Can't you do something to ease my sorrow?'" Arrangement by Ayanna Woods, video/audio by Gordon Byrd. Our own Sarah Larsson had a conversation with Alana Horton over at the Cedar Cultural Center about the Trio, our process, and the meaning of folk music in the modern world. We'd love it if you gave it a click and a read:
https://www.thecedar.org/news/2018/02/14/interview-the-nightingale-trio We're thrilled to be headlining at one of our favorite venues, the Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis. We've seen some of our favorite world music shows of all time at this great space, and we're honored to be able to join the ranks. Local a cappella mavens Mama Caught Fire will be opening!
Get your tickets at www.thecedar.org Hi friends -- In this season of fall and quieting, turning into darkness and chill, we wish you all bountiful harvests and time with the ones you care about. We have been so fortunate to study and learn music from the rich traditions of Eastern Europe, and so we also always work to remember how important it is to value and preserve the culture and history of peoples all over the world. If you're reading this, take moment to contemplate the history of the land you are on, who lived there long ago, and how your own life and personal history intersects with theirs. We've been immensely lucky in the last year to be able to embark on new several new arranging projects, thanks to funding from some great sources in one of our beloved home states. Last year, we received support from the Howard B. & Ruth F. Brin Jewish Arts Endowment arrange two new pieces based on Jewish folk songs from Eastern Europe.

This is a grant program that was approved by the MN legislature in 2008. We LOVE this program, and wish that funds like this were available in all states. What have we been up to since releasing IZVORA? (Besides napping?) Thanks to all your amazing support, we have been riding the wave of this delicious album and enjoying the process of getting it out to all of your homes, libraries, and schools around the country and the world. (Shout out to our friends we mailed copies to in Switzerland, Germany, Norway, Romania, Serbia, and the UK!)
In the meantime, we are all in the thick of many new life phases -- marriage, grad school, new jobs, intensive study fellowships -- as well as doing all the work in the background that fires up our passions for this music: studying new music, working with vocal mentors, composing new arrangements, and more. New music is coming soon, and we're excited to share it with you. Be in touch! We have loved all the communication in the last few months, and we're excited about some performances and collaborations that have grown out of it. Have a great idea for a show? Email us! We can't wait to hear from you. -- The Nightingale Trio Nightingale #3, Sarah, had fun talking with Phil Nusbaum of radio KBEM about the Nightingale Trio's work and approach to studying and presenting folk music.
